Hi people,

What is a Pagerank? As Google defines it,

As seen in the recent times, the importance of PR has decreased among people. But that, in my opinion, is confusing.

I have seen people saying that they don't care about PR and simultaneously, they are intrested in buying links on websites with a high PR. That means they want a good PR for their website.

I do not understand why they pretend to be not a PR supporter. :suspect:

What are your views?

As you may have noticed i am not in any way a PR supporter due to their way of handling the popularity of a website.
I will never actually be fond of them unless they give PageRank ranks based on traffic and not in backlinks.
I got sick of websites without content just with thousands of links to have more value than a blog that has 10,000 daily visits but unfortunately pr1 or 0.

I'd buy links only from websites with high traffic or alexa good alexa rank. Those people you are mentioning to may not just buy links from that websites because of their PR but because apart from PR they got traffic too! If they don't do so, and say they don't support Google PR..huh, just a bunch of losers i guess.

Same here. I am also a supporter of the fact that Pageranks should be based on traffic and the site's popularity, not just backlinks.

For the second part, the people I was referring to are buying links from sites with a PR 4 but no traffic at all. Most of those people say here and there that they hate PR system. I am against that kind of thing. People should stay on their word.

I'd prefer PageRank to examine the quality of the traffic a site has, not just the quantity.

Example: I'm having a warez board, with 10K per day. People come, get what they want and go. I'm also having a webmaster's board with 1K per day, where people come, share their knowledge, help each other, discuss, etc.

Which of the two should be more of more value to a search engine? Of course the second. But it we calculate the PR of a site based on traffic alone, the first board would rank much higher.

Or, I could also set up a bot to use free proxy servers to generate fake traffic for a site. Again, this site will rank high, maybe even with no content at all. Google's algorithm, or any algorithm, wouldn't be able to distinguish real (human) from fake hits. And even if it used a list of all proxy servers in existence to ignore hits from their IPs, someone could use PTC programs to increase his traffic.

Although not the best, I believe the current method Google uses to calcuate a site's PageRank is OK. Backlinks is a decent a way to determine how popular a website is. Who would link back to a site with bad content? Even if the owner paid for backlinks (advertisements in other sites, directory submissions, etc), he would need traffic to support their ads. Traffic can't be generated for a bad website. And they can't fund paid backlinks for a lifetime, if the site can't produce some income.

Sure traffic alone is not the best measure but it should have a role at the calculation of PR.
Backlinks alone are a bad(okay maybe not bad but definitely not the best) method to calculate a websites popularity.
A combination of traffic and backlinks? Ah, yeah that would be an eden ;)
