Smile Ten Tips for Webmasters

Keep it simple, small, and short

Keep the size of your pages small. No one wants to wait 5 minutes for a page to load. Try to keep the load time within 30 seconds for your home page.

Provide enough information on your home page so the reader will know about your location and what is available. Consider storyboarding your information before constructing your pages.

Use one of the standard fonts for the body of the text. Save the file as text-only in a word processor with the extension .html or .htm for DOS. You can also use an HTML editor.

Gif images should be no bigger than 20K. 2"x2" for a square or 1.5"x3" for a rectangle are good examples. Create thumbnail images that link to larger images on separate pages. Show the amount of K for each of the larger pictures so the reader will know the approximate load time.

Keep in mind the width of the page when designing the size of logos. Readers will have various computer screen sizes. If the logo is too wide they will have to scroll in order to see all of it.

Provide new information on a regular basis so readers will return. You might want to design interactive projects, links to changing information, or curriculum materials such as lesson plans.

Avoid long lists of links to other sites.

Each additional page should point back to the home page.

Provide an e-mail address or contact information for comments from readers.

Avoid publishing personal information.
