Default PNG vs GIF - Which one do you prefer?

Hi guys,

I was wondering, which kind of image do you prefer to use when creating websites? Normally, I use GIFs since they are widely accepted by most browsers and are usually smaller than PNG-24 images.

On the other hand, PNG can handle transparencies way much better than GIFs which gives you a lot of freedom when designing a site. Also, I've read somewhere that PNG-8 format can be handled by IE. Is this true?

Share your experiences people!

Well each file fromat got it's own pros & cons

GIF
  • Compatible with all web browsers
  • Small Size
  • Loads quick
  • Supports transparency [with matte]
  • Limited Quality
  • Supports animation frames

PNG
  • Not compatible with all web browsers [in fact sometimes it shows transparent background as a white color]
  • Size is bigger than GIF
  • Takes time to load
  • Supports complete transparency [without matte]
  • Maximum Quality - even better than 100% Jpeg
  • No Animation

PNG-8 is the same as GIF but doesn't support animation.

That's all I know
So what would you prefer? Quality or Speed?

With a well-optimized site, I'd go with quality. Speed is important but if you're smart enough you can have a balance between speed and quality if you learn how to use your resources properly ;)

I make sure all the images on my site are .png, since .gif is just too low quality.

PNG rocks but what about transparency on IE6 and lower? How do you handle that?

make the png image background same color as the website background
e.g if you got a black background then make png black matted
you can also know the color of the background by look for the hex code [#] at CSS

and about gif having extreme low quality, well no, it could reach
256 color quality close to jpeg

I know, I also use this technique when coding a website but with GIF images, not with PNGs.

for icons I use .gif, but for things I need to come out clearly (or for transparency), I'll go for .png.
